Problems of Hierarchy

By Admin on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 with 0 comments

Humans are a hierarchial species. To live socially many species including the Great Apes organize their societies hierarchially. Obviously age is one criteria used as the very young cannot be leaders. For contemporary humans, money or the economic system gives some of us more access to societies goods and services than others. Historically, sex and race have also been used to rank people.

While some hierachy is necessary as with age, social norms and laws have often gone beyond the necessary. Women and racial minorities have been banned from occupations like medicine and even from college. Even after such laws are eliminated, biases in access to social goods and services prevail.
